Artificial Intelligence: A step towards human progress or doom?

Artificial Intelligence also abbreviated as AI was brought into this world by Jay McCarthy in holy year of 1955. Well I termed it a holy because who knew the thing that came may turn up synchronising our lives in its most meticulous way.

So when someone mentions “artificial intelligence”(AI), what is the first thing that comes to your mind?

Most of us imagine an army of human-like robots rebelling against humanity, while a few—folks from a more positive thinking community—are envisioning a bright future where AI serves them in all possible ways from walking a dog early in the morning when the weather is unpleasant to peeling tangerines at Christmas.

While the second scenario is certainly funny like a reality with robots rising up against people, however, is a much more probable event. So is it really worth to praise AI as any side may come up when it’s coin may be tossed.

Basic idea of AI:

Basically AI is a machine with the ability to solve problems that are usually done by we humans with our natural intelligence. But nowadays this concept of machine is being replaced by software.AI is now referred as a computer program that learns how to do tasks that requires forms of intelligence and are usually done by humans and the other thing to take away ,intelligence comes in many ways and comes in many forms & has many different aspects.

What does AI consist of?

So AI consist of a main domain called ‘ Expert System’.Expert system is a system that employs human knowledge in a computer to solve problems that ordinarily require human expertise. A fun fact to mark upon is that expert domain was originally created with the help of AI only well sounds quite like democracy, terms like to the AI , for the AI, by the AI are familiar to it.

AI is mainly categorised into two namely

• Strong AI

• Weak AI

Strong AI is basically a machine or a program which can actually think and perform tasks on its own just like a human being. Whereas weak AI are those which cannot follow these tasks on their own but are made to look intelligent.

Here the word OWN acts as game changer.

AI and Machine learning

Is AI The Same As Machine Learning?

The answer to this is not really,although the two terms are often used interchangeably, they are not the same.

Artificial intelligence is a broader concept, while machine learning is the most common application of AI. Artificial intelligence, in its turn, is a bunch of technologies that include machine learning and some other technologies like natural language processing,algorithms, neural networks, etc.

Factors influencing AI

An AI may be very much complex to understand but its basic factors remain very same to human intelligence. Some of its important influencers are

• Generalisation learning i.e., learning that enables the learner to be able to perform better in situations which are not previously encountered by reasoning.
• Problem solving , To be rational. solving problems in which there is given such and such data & we have to find X. A problem which a primary school student can be also called off to expertise.
• Perception : Analysing and scanning environment and understanding relationships between objects .Self driving cars are an example.
• Language Understanding: Understanding language by syntax and other rules very similar to human intelligence.

AI in day to day life

AI is all around us whether you’re aware of it or not, AI has a massive effect on our life.

Some of the daily usage examples are:

• voice to text features
• Voice assistants, such as Siri, Cortana and Google assistant
• online customer support
• Self driving system of Tesla Motors
• Chat bots
• Facial image recognition
• Gaming bots( Yes, these have huge fan base)
• Smart robots
• Amazon echo and Google home

What does future seeks from AI?

According to critics AI is probably the most important thing that humanity has ever worked on. It is something which is more profound than electricity,gas or fire.

AI may make it possible to have clean, cheap, renewable energy for future and if properly harnessed can generate enormous prosperity for humans.It reduces a lot of human effort in a sort of way as it eliminates a lot of human error in a gigantic workload.

It is estimated that if this growing pace continues then by 2040, AI could create 58 million new jobs!

Merits and Demerits

Some people claim that AI is still in its infancy. Others assure us that we are only a few years away from AI gaining control over humanity. The truth, however, lies somewhere in between.

According to the most trustworthy forecasts out there, AI will outsmart humans at virtually everything in the following 45 years.  It looks like those who understand the full potential of AI are more scared of it than those who only know the basics. 

It is a widespread point of view that one day not only will AI exceed human performance but it will also extend beyond human control.  AI is obviously exciting but simultaneously warrants caution.

Conclusion

Given the innate advantage AI machines have over us humans ( including accuracy, speed, etc.) an AI rebellion scenario is something we should not completely dismiss. Time will show us whether AI is our greatest existential threat or a tech blessing that will improve our quality of life in many different ways. So far, one thing remains perfectly clear: creating AI is one of the most remarkable events for humankind.  In light of this, the smartest approach would be keeping an eye on how the technology evolves, taking advantage of the improvements it brings, and not getting too nervous at the thought of machine takeover.

“Some people call this artificial intelligence, but the reality is this technology will enhance us. So instead of artificial intelligence, I think we’ll augment our intelligence.”
